Thursday 24th January
2.00pm - 5.30pm
Royal Society of Medicine, 1 Wimpole Street, London

Progressive facial fat loss (lipoatrophy) is an increasing problem that affects women and men living with HIV and can have a dramatic and negative impact on the quality of life for those affected. Although the mechanism for this change is not understood there is a general recognition that the multifactorial causes include both HIV treatments and HIV itself.

Recent reports of a new corrective treatment (Polylactic Acid injections, marketed under the trade name NewFill) have provided evidence that reversal of facial fat loss may be possible at relatively low cost. Data is now available showing that treatment is safe and long term and that the subsequent benefits can be significant. This uses an EMEA-approved compound, and has none of the complications of alternative repair procedures such as silicone or collagen.

These procedures are currently being used in the UK – but only by those who are able to afford private treatment and in a few NHS units. The only UK study to use PLA enrolled immediately.
