3 Introduction to anti-retrovirals (ARVs)

3.3 What is combination therapy?

Combination therapy is the term for using 3 or more ARV drugs to treat HIV.

ARV stands for anti-retroviral. This is because HIV is a retrovirus.

Combination therapy is also called:

HIV is a difficult disease to treat.

The treatment only works because there are 3 different drugs that are actively fighting the virus.

If you miss doses or are late taking HIV drugs, then they may not work at all, or will only work for a few months.
