Q and A

Question

Why would test results change so much in a short time?

In September 2007, my viral load was 962, and CD4 was 626. Then in January 2008, my viral load was 4,320, and CD4 was 354.

Why did they change so fast, and are those numbers still good? Should I get on medication? I am worried that I am gonna develop AIDS quickly.

Answer

Hi

Although it can be a shock when your blood tests change quickly, this could be for all sorts of reasons, including lab errors and natural fluctuation.

Any unexpected results first need to be checked with a confirmatory test.

Sometimes takes a while to see any pattern in your results.

With HIV care, everything is individual. Even if it turns out that your HIV is progressing a bit quicker than average, this just means it is likely that you witll start treatment a bit earlier. You will still get the same long-term benefit from treatment.

But first, check out you next results, as your CD4 count could easily be higher again anyway.

    Hi Nageswararno,

Because your viral load is less than 50 this means that the meds are working. With regards to your CD4 count, this could be a blip. Next time you have it checked it could be higher. Your kidneys are fine.
